Kartiki Gonsalves is an Indian filmmaker and photojournalist. She was the one who directed the Oscar Award-winning short film called ‘The Elephant Whisperer’ under the best documentary category. Kartiki is an associate fellow at the international league of conversation photographers (ILCP). She was the one and only director who got oscar award from India for the documentary Short-film. Kartiki was the best photo designer in India.
Early Life of Kartiki Gonsalves
She was born on 2nd November 1986 in Pune, Maharastra, India. Kartiki completed her schooling at St.Hilda’s School & junior college in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India. Later, In the year 2004 to 2007, she did her Bachelor’s degree of science in design & visual communication from Dr G. R. Damodharan college of science in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She completed her post-graduation at Light & Life Academy in Tamil Nadu from 2007 to 2008.
Her father’s name is Timothy Gonsalves who was working as a computer engineer and the director of the Indian Institute of Technology – Mandi. Kartiki’s Mother’s name is Priscilla Gonsalves, she got a PhD in Eastern European History. Her mother is an American by birth. She has an elder sister named Danica Gonsalves. Kartiki Gonsalves belongs to Christianity.
Kartiki Gonsalves likes to travel a lot and she also visited many countries. She is always very much interested to learn about the culture of tribes and their wonderful traditional activities of them. Kartiki used to stay for a month or more with the people and places she explored. Videos which she is capturing at the camp will be converted into documentary film with many interesting things and facts.
She is an avid dog lover and her pet dog’s name is Rusty with whom she used to spend most of her time. She also has a pet cat bread Belgian Malinois named Delani. Both her pets Dog & Cat were close friends.
Kartiki Gonsalves Career
After completing her formal education she begins to work with the IIT madras foundation as a Design and Photographic Consultant till July 2009. Later on from 2009 to 2010, she worked as a store manager at Fab India Overseas Pvt Ltd in Bangalore. She joined in Zela Luxury Health Clubs in Bangalore as a design and photographic executive till November 2010. After doing all kinds of work which is not related to her field she joined an advertising company named Black Coffee as an art director and photographer from 2011 to 2014. The learning which she got from these 4 years made a career path and route finder of her life.
In 2016, She was appointed as the Ambassador of CoalitionWILD. Later in the year of 2018, She founded earth Spectrum in Mumbai and became the operational head. In the year 2020, Peak Design appointed her as its ambassador.
As a director of operations, she decided to work with the Austrian company named Swarovski Optik. This company manufactures optical sights and other types of optical equipment.
Her interest in videography and photography made her direct small documentary films everywhere. At some stage, she began learning how to work on the different types of video recording equipment available and how it works.
Then later she worked in a documentary film from a National Geographic series titled on the brink about ‘The Asiatic Black Bear’.
Her interest in wildlife photography changed to filmmaking because she believed that there is no scope for photography in India. In an interview, while talking about her career she said
“I ventured into advertising after my post-graduation. I eventually quit pursuing wildlife and social documentary photography, working as a tour guide to support myself financially. But I soon realized that photography in the area I was interested in did not have much scope In India at this time. I realized filmmaking was a tool that I could use to reach out to the world… I believe that strong imagery has the power to change minds.”
On 13 March 2023, she won an Oscar for directing The Elephant Whisperers. She shared the award with the film’s producer Gurneet Monga. While giving a speech after winning the Oscar, she said,
“I stand here today to speak on the sacred bond between us and our natural world. For the respect of indigenous communities. For entity towards other living beings, we share our space with. And finally for co-existence. Thank you to the academy for recognizing our film highlighting indigenous people and animals. To Netflix for believing in the power of this film. To Guneet my Producer and my entire team and finally, to my mother father and sister who are up there somewhere, you’re the centre of my universe. To my motherland India.”
Kartiki Gonsalves also states that her next film will be on & about the relationship between the Orca (killer Whale) and its Handler.
